@Urameshi turned 29 two weeks back. Celebrated with a simple & nice dinner at The Sire. Heard of this place for some time already and there couldn't be a better occasion to make my first visit. Food was not particularly great but I'm very much intrigued by the pieces of history on display. Again, Happy Birthday to you @Urameshi!

We choose to shoot Lexy many times now for the obvious reason. This has to be one of our most "taxing" shoot, considering the suffering we went through which requires even a visit to the clinic! (for me at least). Lesson learnt! At the end of the day though, the results matters more and I'm happy with it. Shot July-10-2010.

Minny: Faded Memories

This is by far the shortest photoshoot session we had. Started with CLS but figured out it wasn't a good idea with 8 photographers & limited time. This place is somewhere I've spotted way before it became a hotspot among photographers (see my older post: Lonely Tree). A little different type of post-processing in faded colors this time around, to try out something new. Thanks Minny for your commitment & the professionalism shown!

A couple of shots done on strobe. The outcome is much more dramatic, but the feel of the scene is lost. This type of result to me is more suitable for fashion shoot, where the focus is totally on the model. So, which is your preference - natural lighting or induced lighting?

It's not always you get a chance to do a photo shoot in a car showroom. What more, one of which is the most recognized luxury car brand in this part of the world. We're talking about the German car maker, that promises a "sheer driving pleasure" - no points for getting that right.. yes it is the Beemer! We wrote in and they grant us the permission..

It was actually meant to be a Pixers photo shoot session for Juliet, a lovely young model we met at the MM2 event months back. But I ended photographing these machines while the rest got on the job with her. Don't get me wrong, Jul is one nice model to work with! Hopefully I'll get to re-photograph her in the future.. As of now, these are my take on the beautiful machines, a collection presented entirely in black & white.

Wear it from Your Heart

When we were asked by Vanessa Diamonds & Mt. Miriam Cancer Hospital a month ago to shoot for their Valentine's day charity sale fund raising for the hospital, I jump at the opportunity even though it's a non-paying job. The idea is to showcase the jewelery - a black Tahitian Pearl encrusted with diamonds & jades, which will be autioned off for the benifit of the hospital.

It's my first photoshoot of the year & I'm happy to kick it off doing my bits for a good cause. Those that opines that free job means low quality job may seriously want to think again! It's Lexy again and she's back doing what she's best at - modeling & complementing the jewelery.. effectively.

I hate to admit this but yes, I've been slack in the post-production of my photowork. As of today, there are still several photoshoot which I've done since December in the queue. The reason is because of an added commitment of late.. Yes, there is something more important than photography at the time being, but I shall be back on track really soon :)

This photoshoot is one of my personal natural-lighting favourites of 2009. Model is again Lexy, which we love so much to shoot again & again. The presentation concept is something that I've wanted to do all this while, but was unable to due to my lack of literacy in the Chinese language. It's however finally possible thanks to my dearest girlfriend - appreciate her effort in getting the wordings and her input in putting up this album!!

A friend recently gave me a nudge about not updating my blog for some time now. Yes, I've been tied up lately. Furthermore, the group went on a "mini sabatical" in the month of November. No photoshoot were planned (some got postponed rather) to recharge ourselves in anticipation of a busy month in December, starting with this one..

A pre-wedding portrait - Cheok Hoong, fondly known as Loke is a close friend of ours for almost 10 years now. It's always a joy to see yet another friend tying up the knot. This shoot was done at 32 At The Mansion, a beautifully restored colonial mansion situated at the Upper Penang Road. Great settings for beautiful pre-wedding images. Check them out below!

Shoot Like A Pro: Shots of Fion & Ying

These are the few shots I love, taken during the hands-on model shoot session. We're only given 25 minutes each to work on both models. To pose the model and ensure that you captured the best (at least something that Louis would be proud of) under that amount of time is a real pressure! The result in the end, not too bad at all! Louis Pang's Shoot Like A Pro

This is a workshop I've always wanted to attend ever since I'm being introduced to Louis. I love his photography style. His work is photojournalistic, creative & thoughtful, yet clean. The only thing holding me back all these while is the cost of it - it's not cheap considering that the man himself is an international wedding photographer with 6 WPPI awards under his belt.

When I first mooted the idea of attending this workshop to my friends, I wasn't really serious about it. It was Fred who managed to get us (TK & I) into enrolling. Fred just picked up this passion a couple of months ago so I was rather surprised by his enthusiasm!

Meeting Louis is great. He is such an amazing teacher! It's a compressed workshop but hopefully those tips & skills we picked up will help us be a better photographer and produce more beautiful images. We came out from the workshop definitely inspired, not to mention the new found friendship with some of the fellow participants :)

Here's the collection of pre-wedding portraits for Bengho & Hooiling, shot right after their ROM last Saturday. Initial plan of doing the shoot at the Khoo Kongsi had to be dropped after we were told to pay a rather extorbitant fee! Ended up doing the shoot along the street of Gat Lebuh Cina, where the majestic Custom building stands.

It's one hot day but I enjoyed the shoot. Hope my work is well liked by both Bengho & Hooiling. Congrats!

5 days of Raya break last week and no photoshoot planned sounds like a disaster! But fret not. Determined of not letting myself rot at home in what seemed to be an "unproductive" holidays, I quickly arranged an impromptu photoshoot. Yeah, Nat saved my holidays :)

Titled "Skylight" as the dull grey evening skies turned into beautiful orangy hues as we shoot, though for a short period of time before it was shrouded by total darkness. Nat is looking great as usual!!

First outing for the Pixers, a photography group formed with several of my photography buddies. The talent for this shoot is Natalie, a beautiful law student whom Jonsern managed to coax to being our model.

My idea was to do a photobook with story line but it didn't work out in the end. The mundane morning sky wasn't any helpful either. Luckily Nat's chirpiness saved the day. Changed the initial idea to a fashion themed shoot, which is why you don't see Nat smiled as much in my shots - I love them! It shows that edgy character of hers!

With this album done, I'm proposing another "happy" themed portrait with her sometime soon.. to which she has happily obliged (:

"H" for Harini, born August 5th at day 26th of her life in this world. If you followed my blog closely, you'd have seen the potraits of her parents before. This series of shots in B&W was done in a quick 15 minutes during our first visit two weekends ago. Baby H was too small to be comfortably photographed so I made it real quick with whatever pose she gave. As you can see towards the end, the little girl began getting irritated - a signal telling me to stop snapping & hand her back to her mom :)

I've always wanted to do an indoor potrait shoot. The type with beautiful & stylish interior designs. Now when I think of that, the only place in Penang that comes across my mind is the stylish G-Hotel. But to shoot in public places seems like a less brilliant idea, what more with the number of photographers that'll be joining me - it'll sure create a buzz!

That's when it suddenly struck my mind that I can do this at the show house of the project I bought. 8 houses/designs to choose from, now that's what you call spoilt for choices! A call to the developer is all I need to get this arranged..

And now comes the model. Who else could better suit the theme than Rayne - a friend who's also the girlfriend of my lighting assisstant of the day ;) Very grateful to the both of them and especially appreciate the fact that Rayne even put a great effort in wardrobe selection as well as got her makeup professionally done! Awesome!

In this shoot, only a single flash is used, shot through umbrella on one side while a handful was done on natural light only. This is to me a good start in CLS photography. Shall play with more lights in my subsequent shoots. Enjoy.

The Wedding of SoonYee & SiewEng - 14.06.09

It's finally done! Took me a while to finally manage to find time to work on this but I hope it is well worth the wait. I consider post-processing as part of the process in producing my end product and I wouldn't deliver my photos raw. It's akin to Intel shipping its parts without executing a proper test. Would you buy an untested part? SiewEng had another 5 photographers (!) covering the wedding, so I hope this little delay won't do any damage :)

At the same time, I would like to announce that together with my group of friends, I would be available for booking for any photography assignments be it wedding or potrait shoot. We figure it's time we start earning from our passion in order to take it to the next level. I guarantee you'll get the most value for your money! Call me up or send me a text message.

Valli * The Countdown Begins

As promised in my previous post, I'm rushing for this second series to be completed before Val delivers. Nag is hoping it could be 07/08/09.. but 08/08 is equally great as well! We shall just wait & see.

Now, this second series of potraits which were shot at their home was done after I felt that I lost my touch on the first one. It's weird but photographers do suffer from occasional burnt-out. I took inspiration from Jennifer-Tai, a Seattle-based Malaysian born photographer whose work inspired me so much of late! The photos in this collection are given the cross-processing effect - you either like it or hate it. As for me, I'm experimenting with it and am still discovering the way to make it nicer.

To Nag & Val, hope you like the two collections I've shot for you. Looking forward to the arrival of baby Nag!

In a blink of an eye, Valli is already into her 9th month of pregnancy. With the baby girl due in a matter of weeks, we decided to give this joyful mother & the dad to-be a potrait shoot.

This was done 2 weekends ago at the Tropical Spice Garden. It's a nice location for beautiful potrait shots. No fancy setup for this one, just pure natural light. I did another series of photos for them at home last weekend, and I shall post this up ASAP.. hopefully before the baby girl comes out ;)

The Wedding Day - WanChin & WeiFoong

This is the third wedding I've shot so far. The couples are long time friends. I think I did OK for this one, just that some shots from the dinner had been uncaptured, or were not captured the way I'd like them to be. The reason is simply because I don't feel comfortable moving around people when I'm not officially the tasked photographer. It's like you're not given the license to roam..

Sizzling Hot! - Miss Model of the World Malaysia '09

It has been 2 weeks since my last post. I've been lazy and busy with work at the same time. Those waiting to check out my latest work, hope this is worth the wait ;) Shot this last Sunday in Ipoh together with Nag & Adrian. It's a photography competition organized in conjunction with the Miss Model of the World Malaysia beauty pageant which drew a record 400-odd photographers! Shooting in this huge turnout event was surprisingly not difficult except for the inconsiderate-few-blocking-out-of-nowhere moments - photographers should learn some ethics! It's a great trip and experience nonetheless.

My latest potrait series was shot last Sunday, featuring May - a close friend who's also our photo shooting kaki. After playing the role of photographer all these while, she's decided to take on different role this time, by being the model herself!

Got the idea for the photoshoot location after seeing one of TY's recent work. The colorful graffiti art adorning several walls of this ruin provides an amazingly beautiful backdrop for the pics. Indeed this is my most colorful work ever! Check it out...

Lonely Tree

This tree caught my attention as I was driving around looking for some refreshing subject to shoot last Saturday. The lone tree with no leaves, and the wild grasses that grows around it makes it an even more captivating sight. Too bad the skies wasn't as clear.

Definitely a good break from the usual potraits that I like to do. What do you think?

Yes, it is finally here after nearly 3 weeks of waiting! What's with Dell?? Making customers wait that long for a delivery is unacceptable! I'd have another week of suffering doing PPs if not because of my new Lenovo T400 (with Centrino 2 vPro!) which I received as a replacement to my old work laptop. So here comes the question - what do I do with 2 brand new laptops?

Sell the Dell off and buy a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 as well as a Nikkor 55-200mm VR seems like a good idea :) [Update: Dropped the idea. Falling in love with my new lappie!]

My "ex" gym buddy is all grown up by officially marrying Jenny! For the first time I'm calling him Ethan instead of Pang Gyee.. If you recall, I shot their marriage proposal in my first assignment ever (my second blogpost - I hope I've improved tremendously since..)

The registration of marriage took place two Sundays ago and I'm glad to be shooting this for them. I know they've been waiting for some time for the photos - thanks for the patience and here they are. Congrats!

SoonYee & SiewEng

This photoshoot was done 2 weeks ago in anticipation of Soon Yee & Siew Eng's wedding day which took place last Sunday. Siew Eng is a friend whom I've known in high school. It's my first time shooting with Adrian - we did this together with Matthew, ML & TK. Great first experience with CLS and off camera flash. It gives a whole different outcome especially in shooting at low lighting condition.

The place is again the old Butterworth train yard which we had our previous potrait shoot a week before, and we managed to squeeze in another session at the Upper Penang Road area at night.

It's been great to be part of this couple's wedding celebration. Shall post up the wedding day shots once I'm done with them...

'O' is for Octovia

If you think the name sounds exotic and wonders what it is, wonder no more. Octovia who hails from Sabah is indeed a joy to work with. This shoot was done at the Butterworth railway station and the abandoned train yard two weekends ago despite early morning rain which threatened to kill off the photoshoot.

The gloomy wheather and the dark interior of the abandoned station was rather tricky for a good shot. And this was before I discovered the wonder of CLS. Personally, I may not be really happy with the result but the good news is, Octovia has agreed to another shoot sometime soon. So, there's still chance to make amends...

The Wedding of Terry & Siew Fee

I'm finally back after a one-month "unscheduled downtime"! Starting off my revival with the shots of my cousin Terry's wedding on May-23. It's a normal Chinese wedding sans the elaborated tradition - something most modern couples opt for these days.

While I'm not 100% satisfied with all my shots, I'd say it's decent for a first try. I have a tendency (or rather style) in my shots if you notice close enough. It's something I'll try to do less and balance up moving forward. Dinner shots will unfortunately have to wait as I'm tied up with other assignments. Enjoy this for now and congrats to the couple!

A Great First - Photographing A Wedding

OK, so this is the 3rd weekend I'm unable to do any photo post-processing. No PP equals no posting :( This is getting frustrating! My company laptop has the security feature that somehow prevent the "illegal" copy of the Photoshop CS4 from being installed. I've placed order for a new Dell Studio15 and all I can do is hope for them to be delivered as soon as possible.

Did my first ever wedding shoot for a cousin of mine yesterday. It was a great first experience. All I can say is that wedding photography is definitely not as easy as it seems. Didn't manage to get all the shots that I've earlier planned. Events happened at a lightning speed and the next thing you know, you've missed it. The key here is be fast, shoot, and only figure out if the shot is good later.

Few learning from my first wedding assignment:

- Shoot in RAW if possible. I know that RAW files take up much of the memory but use this to shoot the event that may not be repeatable. This would be useful as I noticed that some of the important shots got underexposed.

- Get the details of the itinerary and discuss with the couple so that you'll know when to plan for the next event. In my case, I wasn't even aware that the couple was preparing for the march-in during the dinner!
- Ask the bride & groom to take note of your presence and try as much as possible to give you a good angle. I know it's best to let the event flow naturally but in certain scenes, you just couldn't get the best angle with all the relatives & friends trying to get a piece of the action. (and I'm sure they would want their photos to turn out with their faces in instead of their back!)

- Change a new set of battery for the flash gun for the dinner if you've been shooting the morning session. My flash suddenly gave up at the critical moment causing me to lose an important scene.

- It's always easier to work in a team of two. I couldn't keep up with the convoy somehow and missed the arrival back to the groom's house. *sigh*

- Keep the ISO the lowest possible to avoid noise.

Be Right Back

As you've known, the HDD of my laptop crashed last Thursday causing me to lose much of my photography work and other work documents. So I'm in no mood for any photoshoot this weekend. Instead, I'm surveying on laptops as I plan to get one for personal use. ...Then again, my company is upgrading us with a new HP laptop very soon.. I'm in a dilemma - should I or should I not get one? If yes, what model would you recommend?

Love Me... In Historic Georgetown - Weifoong & Wanchin's Pre-Wedding Vol.3

This is the final installment of Wf & Wc's pre-wedding photos. The shoot was done in quite a rush at several heritage locations around Georgetown as we were trying to squeeze in as much locations as possible before the sun sets. In the end, we managed to do it much to our delight!

The Shortlisted Entries

This is my only shot (out of 4) that made it through the final 70 of the claimed hundred of entries submitted for the Historical Wedding Gown Photography competition which took place 2 weeks back. The 70 prints are now being displayed at brand new Penang Times Square, in conjuction with the 1st Penang Culture, Art & Lifestyle Fair from May 1st-3rd.

I finally made my way to see the rest of the entries a while ago. After checking them out, I can only put the judges credibility to question. Are they professionals who know what a good shot is? Only 10-20% of the entries are good. The rest are what I term as rejects - I easily have better shots which are featured here in my blog that didn't even make it pass my final selection!

No offence to the rest of the participants but those level of sub-standard work would not ever make it past a more credible photography competition! The results will be announced at 5pm tomorrow. Judging at the scenario, I doubt my shot can win the top prizes. Whatever the outcome is, I know of my own capability and the quality of my work - and those alone already made me a winner!

Love Me... At the Beach - Weifoong & Wanchin's Pre-Wedding Vol.1

After 2 weeks, here's the first series of Weifoong and Wanchin's pre-wedding photos shot at Batu Feringghi. The title "Love Me.." was actually inspired by the song "Love, Me" by Collin Raye which is Wanchin's all-time favourite love song. In this series, I tried to bring out the love theme by inserting lines of poems to some of the shots. This turned out well in complementing the flow of the photos in my opinion. It took me a lot of effort to get this done and I'm personally happy with this album - What do you think?

A New Identity?

Out of boredom the other day, I tried to whip up a new signature/logo to be used on my work. The current signature that I used, if you noticed had been scaled down a little with shadow added to highlight it. I like this for its simplicity but at the same time, I want one that is more sophisticated. I want something that people can easily associate to my work.. sort of a brand! So I came up with the one on the right! Now that I love both, I figure that I'll use the new one for my assignment-based work while retaining the current for my personal shots.

At the same time, I registered a new blog at WordPress worrying that my domain could be taken ;) I'll switch over once my Blogspot reaches its limit.

The first time I saw Shamala was through her internship resume. To be honest, she's one of the more stunning Indian girls I've seen in real life. Having hired my intern, I passed her resume to Nag.. who hired her right away! ;) Now that her internship is coming close to an end, we made sure that she modelled for us to satisfy our penchant for photography. This series of shots didn't come easy. It took us a lot of coaxing (plus Nag's dirty trick) before she finally agreed! :) :)

The shoot was done at Church St. together with Nag & Wilson in just under 2 hours. Rather short but I'm nevertheless pleased with the results.

A Feline Encounter

Fluffy, my dog has never failed to amuse me. This time, he has made a new friend! That was what my mom told me when I came home yesterday. But with who? I know he's friends with the newspaper man and my lady neighbour, in which he'll make whiney noises and wag his tails with excitement everytime he sees them. For the rest, you get barks and howls! So, who's this new friend of his? It turned out to be a female white cat! Now I wonder how a cat could end up at my door step, 11 floors from the ground?!

This morning, the kitty came again. I took these shots in just 10 minutes as I was rushing to work. Am glad they turned out okay. Look at the eyes!

Timeless Elegance : Karen

It took me quite a while before I managed to coin up the title for this series of my work. Why the title you ask? Well, that’s what came to my mind when I think of wedding gown, historical buildings... and of course, beautiful woman. See the relation? Anyway, this series as mentioned in my earlier post, are the shots of Karen. She’s the very first model I shot on the first day of the photoshoot. Needless to say, she’s my favourite. Just see the number of good shots I had ;)

Indeed, Penang's heritage buildings provide a great backdrop for wedding photos. This has been another good learning and kudos to the models for their sheer professionalism.

A good practice for me shooting indoor without a flash. Shooting in this condition with a 50mm always gives me the problem when it comes to image sharpness. Can anyone tell me what would the best setting be?

Sneak Preview: Historical Wedding Gown Photography

What am I up to this weekend? I took part in my first ever photography competition! Titled Historical Wedding Gown Photography, it is a bridal gown model shoot with a touch of nostalgia done at some of Penang's historic sites. Day 1 of the shoot, which is today was done at Fort Cornwallis and Little India while Day 2 will be at the iconic HSBC building and the Chew Jetty. I'm all excited for tomorrow! Looking forward to improve from today's result.

Perspective

Perspective is defined as a way of looking at or thinking about something. This is obviously an important element in photography. How good a photograher and his work is, depends largely on his ability to see and frame his shot beyond the ordinary.

Rather than shooting your subject the way it is normally seen, experiment with different angles. Frame your subject the unconventional way by tilting your camera beyond the usual 90deg and play with the depth-of-field. You'll be surprised at the results.

I took these shots as I was heading to the carpark after work one day. Now who says a mundane object can't be an interesting subject of photography?

A Walk Along The Heritage Trail

Presenting... my second potrait photography work! In these shots is Siew Wun, whom I've known together with Janice for many years now. A few weeks back, she was asking if I could help do shots of her with her new "bob cut" hairdo. I agreed and requested that she came out with the suggestion for the theme & location. It's not surprising why she chose to be photographed at the Armenian Street. It's the charm of the historical street which stands some of Penang oldest heritage buildings. Clearly there's a sense of belonging in her with the area, which made the session so much at ease, yielding great results.

...And Now, Meet Linda!

Finally, here it is - the second series of the photoshoot done on Saturday, featuring Linda. Personally, I'm quite pleased with the results. The fact that the model was dressed in red really compliments well with the yellow wall of the building (good color choice there Linda!). One learning that I picked up from this shoot is that we should not trust our eye when we check on the LCD image under bright sunny day. Use the graph and never underexpose more than -0.3 step (personal opinion). The post-processing was tedious and time consuming. Imagine sorting through over 500 shots! Good thing is, I learned a few new skills using Photoshop and GIMP... And I'm doing what I love doing most!

Finally a Successful Photoshoot Outing!

So, yesterday was spent shooting on some friends. It's my first real try at potrait photography. Been trying to arrange a photoshoot outing for some time and finally successful of doing so! (partly thanks to SY for dragging us up as it was raining in the morning. We would have slept through if not of her persistance). The shoot was done at the yellow Town Hall building at Esplanade and along the Beach Street. It was a good outing, not to mention another great learning! Got over 500 shots and I've been spending the whole day sorting them. Hope I could post them up soon...

A Hidden Treasure: Demystifying the Art of Chinese Opera

Day before yesterday I was basically left with no plan after work. My appointment was cancelled, and I'm skipping gym since I'm pretty tired. I had my camera in the car (I was initially planning on re-shooting the pink flowers) but by the time I left, it was already very late. I reluctantly drove home but as I approached my car park, I could see a handful of crowd converging at the open area next to it. Upon closer inspection, I realized it's a chinese opera! Lady luck seemed to be smiling at me.. I've always wanted to shoot a chinese opera and here came my chance, right at my very own door step!!

I ended up spending 2 hours shooting and another 2 today enjoying the show. If only I wasn't worried about moving around in front of the spectator, the shots and the angles should definitely be better... Let me know what you think.

* A little piece of history & fact here - The Chinese opera in an organized form began in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD). As the dynasties changed, the art evolved and is currently existing in 368 different forms! The Beijing opera, being the best known combines strong traditional Chinese string & percussion rhythm with acting together with elaborate make-up and fancy period costumes.

Another Hole in the Pocket

I finally bought a 50mm f/1.8 lens yesterday after trying out Eu Chin's last week. It costs just RM370, one of the cheapest in Nikkor range of lenses but the images are amazing. Bumped into Chong Sing at Botanical Garden as I headed there to try out my new lens.. and his kids Jaysen & Jayden had agreed to model. These are the shots..

Building a GREAT Team!

It was a low key affair for our team's teambuilding for this quarter. With the economic situation the world is in and the uncertainty within the company itself, we have decided to hold the event at our very own boss' house! Yup! On the programme line-up was delicious satay rice for lunch, followed by Wii games competition, an ice-breaking session, a test-your-brain game, and Taboo - simple yet enjoyable.

For me, it wasn't the activities I was interested in. Rather, this event provided me an opportunity to practice my photography skill. I had earlier borrowed the 50mm f1.8 lens from Eu Chin, and my.. how impressed I am with the outcome! This is really a great lens for potraiture & landscape shots at a bargain price.. now I'm seriously contemplating getting one.

In Love With San Francisco

San Francisco - the first US city I stepped foot on. Was there for 2 days on my transit to Oregon last October. I love everything about this city. The weather's lovely, the sky's blue, the people are ever so friendly, the buildings are mostly architecture masterpieces, and the attractions are aplenty!

To simply put it.. it's picturesque & lovely. I wished I had more photography worthy shots to share but most of them are rather "touristy" - the kind you pose in front of a landmark, etc.. Anyhow, here are the few I really like. [Click here]

There's Something About Fluffy

There must be something about Fluffy that makes me adore him so much. For those who didn't know, Fluffy is my pet dog, a Shih Tzu which I brought home 2 years ago. I always think that he's the best looking dog.. you just have to see his pics and you'll get what I mean. Now he's very much a part of the family.. everyone just loves him!

Shooting Fluffy is a great challenge as he is never at still. If only he understood what I told him to do. I've always wanted to bring him out for a shoot at a park or somewhere nice. One thing about Fluffy though, is that he's such a homely dog! He's not the type that enjoys going out.. trust me. Sometimes I wonder, does he ever get bored staying home everyday?

Of D90 & Little Jenelle

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my beloved D40 for some time... weeks to be exact, ever since the day we went shooting during the Chinese Heritage & Cultural Celebration downtown early this month. I'm always attracted to a bigger, bulkier, longer (lens I mean) camera. It gives some sort of satisfaction owning one. So 2 weeks ago, I decided to put my D40 up for sale with an asking price of 1.1k. I figured losing 300 bucks after 4 months of usage is reasonable. The replacement? The brand new Nikon D90!

Offers came in but the highest it could fetch was RM950. Finally on Thursday, I decided I'll let it go for that price. Arrangement was made with the buyer to handover the cam the next day. Somehow that day however, I decided to check out on the trade-in value from another store (previous store offered RM900). To my surprise this shop offered 1.1k(!) plus RM400 for my old Canon EF 75-300mm lens. Cool! The D90 costs 3.9k and that's a pretty standard price on all 3 stores that I've checked - which means.. a balance of only 2.5k more to pay! Needless to say, I called up the buyer and cancelled the deal ;)

I purchased my D90 on Saturday at the shop Keith recommended (Mega Star). The camera definitely felt sturdy - bulkier & heavier. Total price was slightly over 4k with a CPL filter. I'm finally the proud owner of a brand new Nikon D90!! Feeling ecstatic, I headed to G Hotel to try out my new toy... and it must be a lucky day for little Jenelle to have the priviledge for being the very first model shot on this cam. Isn't she lovely?

Last Wednesday, we were off to G Hotel after work as Gerard was temporarily staying there having just returned from his relocation at the States. The initial plan was to do a photoshoot,.. but do we have a model??

The guys, instead of meeting at the pool as earlier planned has decided to go for a dinner. I ended up waiting & even managed to complete a few laps at the pool! By the time they came, the sky has turned into total darkness. It might seems like there are little to shoot but with a little touch of creativity, we can turn nothing into something!

A Celebration of Love - Pang Gyee & Jenny

To start it off, it's a little disappointing that the photos didn't turn out the way I wanted them to be. I had earlier borrowed my camera to a friend and somehow the setting for the metering was changed to "spot". Being new to metering, I didn't notice or understood what metering does to the photo. The positive thing is, I now learned metering, white balance, as well as colour setting!

Anyway, this event has been planned for a long time. Great effort from Pang Gyee to ensure he is able to close the deal in one go ;) Chiang Leng even came all the way from KL to share this joyous moment. Jenny, obviously did not know what was going on as we told her this would be a normal get-together dinner.

I reached E&O after getting the SB800 speedlite from Keith. Got kinda nervy but we proceeded with a few shots outside the hotel. It could be much better (for sure!), but hey I'm still learning. The night went as planned. The food was awesome! After the meal, came the moment we've been waiting for. Pang Gyee played the piano much to Jenny's amazement! There was minor flaw, but it perfectly touched Jenny's heart :) The proposal followed thru with Jenny saying yes right away!! It was simply a great night in the end. Mission accomplished and here's waiting for the big night!

Photography & I

So here it is, my very first try at blogging on a Valentine's Day.. I can assure you, blogging is a talent! Writing is never easy, what more keeping the blog interesting & entertaining.. Everyone seems to be blogging these days.., well almost.. Not wanting to be left out and having revived my passion on one of my hobbies, I decided to start one of my own.. at this very day!

As an introduction, this blog is aimed to share my thoughts & works on photography... Yes, PHOTOGRAPHY! For a start, I'm not new in the world of photography.. I picked up my first SLR 12yrs back, at the age of 16. It was a Canon EOS 500N. Film photography was expensive, you never know what you've shot and ended with a bunch of below-par shots after you got the film developed.. such a pain to the wallet! When DSLR first came out, the price was amazingly high. I didn't have that much money to afford one so I gave up the hobby I loved so much.

Until a couple of years back, entry level DSLR started to retail at below RM2k. Definitely much affordable now but the thought of owning one and pursuing this hobby didn't cross my mind. Perhaps, work was taking up most of my time and I was rather focussed on my career.

Towards the end of last year, I was on a 2-month company trip to the States. I figured out I need a good camera to shoot the memories of my first ever trip out of the country! A friend of mine was telling that the Nikon D40 was selling at only RM1.4k - that's a really great bargain! A quick research on the internet and I made up my mind. The 6.2 MP spec was not a concern., as I don't intend to do any large print anyway. I purchased my D40 days before flying off and there I was... happily snapping away in the States ;)

It's been more than 2 months since I returned home. The decision to get a DSLR was right. No regret! Got to know a bunch of Nikonians.. and I'm so hooked! Tonight I'll be shooting the marriage proposal of a close friend. This will be a good practice for me.. and I shall post some pics soon...
